This album is the follow-up to the Star One debut album Space Metal from 2002. The music on this new album is heavier, darker and far more powerful than its predecessor. The guitars dominate this album and the vocals are again out of this world.
Arjen Lucassen comes up with a great list of musicians and singers on this cd. The band consists of Ed Warby (drums), Peter Vink (bass guitar), Joost van den Broek (keyboards) and Gary Wehrkamp (guitars). Singers featured on this album are: Russell Allen (Symphony X), Damian Wilson (Threshold), Floor Jansen (Revamp) and Dan Swano (Edge Of Sanity).
The albums opens with The Rabbit Hole, a rather short keyboard song, followed by Digital Rain which is an up tempo prog rock song of the highest quality. This song really reminds me of Ayreon and especially the harmony vocals at the end are amazing and give me real goose bumps every time I hear it.
The second highlight is the song Humans See, Humans Do, featuring a marvellous guitar intro followed by a vocal duet between Allen en Jansen, a sparkling guitar solo and sad but true a couple of grunts…
Cassandra Complex and 24 Hours are also great examples of spacy prog rock songs with lots of outstanding melodies and catchy choruses; however the ultimate Star One track is the final song of the album called: It All Ends Here. This is space metal as it should be, great vocals, and relaxed guitar passages, power ballad like passages and truly amazing tempo changes and melodies.
This new Star One album is far better than Space Metal, the sound is much better, the production is awesome and all the songs are excellent. In my humble opinion this album is one of the best releases of 2010 so far
Truly recommended, especially the last track is an absolute musical gem!
