Have you tried the new Steve Wilson 5.1 remasters of King Crimson's Lizard and Red? Right from memory lane into future where all music will be 5.1.
Can't wait for Starless and Larks in 5.1

I have the SW remaster of In The Court of the Crimson King, and the others are on my long list to buy. I hope your prediction is right, but I have my doubts. The DVD-A and SACD formats never did take off, but I love them. There is no better way to listen to the tiny amount of prog available in 5.1. Perhaps Bluray as the next surround format will have better success. Thankfully, SW does the PT albums in the DVD-A format. I wish more artists would too, but most people just don't really care about the quality of their music. And these days of digital downloaded music, it is worse than ever.... very sad...

I admit I download music sometimes, but I don't think it's always a bad attitude. I have discovered Porcupine Tree by this way ! You think that people don't care about quality, that is right, but not all the people, so keep being positive :![]()
Imho, only a few people can listen in SACD. At my home, we only have stereo hifi.
I have recently bought PT " lightbulb sun" in 5.1/dvd. I have compared quality between my cd and dvd players, and the cd player won. Not to say that the remaster is not good, just to say that a dvd player can be bad quality for cds !
I've bought the collection of 70-75 Genesis albums (Gabriel's period) and was surprised by the quality of the remastering. It sounds really better ! try it !

I remeber being struck in awwhh with the Zeppelin remasters. I loved being able to hear the squeaky hinge on the kick drum in "Since I've been Loving You". I'd never heard that before. It was like being in the studio adjusting mics on Bonhams kit!!
On the other hand I remember hating the Kansas Greatest Hits remasters. They were trying to give alternate mixes (I quess) and I so think they got it right the first time.
I hear Steely Dan and some other more musically critical artists are releasing their catalogs on Hi-Band width downloads. So maybe there is hope for the future. But with the masses listening on those tiny ear-bud headphones......probably not.

Far & Away my favorite thus far is "The Lamb..." in 5.1. Not only does the music itself seem much more bright & alive, but the inclusion of the visuals from the live performances of it, along with the surviving clips of Gabriel performing it, give us as close an approximation of what it was like to see this modern classic in person.

Short version: Starless and bible black: still 2 compromises ("Lament" and "The night watch").
Red: no compromises anymore, no more prisoners taken, no more questions open. And a terrific keystone to the King's cathedral on the occasion of his resignation for the next 7 years ("Starless").

Hi again, nane35! I am not sure how you listened to Lightbulb Sun in 5.1 if you only have a stereo system and a DVD player. I have this reissue and there are 2 discs, one is a remastered stereo mix and the second one is a 5.1 surround sound, high resolution DVD-A (DVD-audio). This type of disc CANNOT be played in a regular DVD player, unless it also has a either a DTS or Dolby Digital surround layer also. These are two other surround sound formats most often used for movies, but also with some music, but they are not high resolution mixes like DVD-A is and therefore are not as good . Some of PT's remastered surround discs also have this layer (In Absentia does), but Lightbulb Sun does not. This DVD-A can only be played in a DVD-A player or a universal player (which plays every kind of disc except Blurays, including SACDs). So I am assuming that you listened to the stereo mix with both your CD player and your DVD player... am I right? If so, of course it didn't sound any better. On the other hand, the DVD-A disc version is so FAR superior to any other mixes, but you have to have all the right equipment to play it, which means you need a DVD-A or universal player (that is what I have) AND a complete 5.1 surround sound speaker system (5 speakers and subwoofer). If you bought this version without having the right equipment, you are really almost wasting your money, since you cannot play the DVD-A disc.
I hope all this info is not too long and too technical, but I wanted to help you understand why the way you heard Lightbulb Sun is why it didn't sound good to you. It is not that the remaster is not good. Believe me, if you could hear the DVD-A surround sound mix played on my system, it would blow you away! It is so much better quality than a CD stereo mix and you hear so much more music, such as instruments, harmonies and other things you don't even hear on the regular CD (due to the high resolution mix). In the future, if you want to buy a 5.1 surround sound mix but don't have a DVD-A player, make sure you read the "fine print" information about the album you want to buy. At the very bottom of my Lightbulb Sun back cover, it says: "DVD-A disc will not play on conventional CD players and may not be compatible/playable on all DVD players". Look for info that tells you that it has a DTS or Dolby digital surround layer also; these will play on regular DVD players. But of course, if you only have a stereo system, you won't hear surround sound anyway. In your case, stick to remastered stereo mix CDs. The King Crimson albums that Steven Wilson is doing now have 4 different mixes on them! He keeps changing how he remasters his own and other band's albums and quite honestly, it gets pretty confusing, to say the least. The limited edition of The Incident has a DTS surround mix only, which is not the best quality mix. I have just read that he now is releasing the album on DVD-A also. So now if I want this highest quality mix, I have to purchase another one! But for his solo album Insurgentes, the limited edition was done in a DVD-A high resolution mix. I don't understand why he keeps changing things....
Sorry this is so long, but I hope it helps... ![]()
Almost forgot to mention... I am planning to buy the Genesis 70-75 box set also. I have heard good things about it several times.

Hello all, I just found this site/radio station! Very happy to listen
Steve Hackett's Spectral Mornings remaster sounds much better than the original version, and quite good in general.
I also like Kate Bush's Hounds of Love remaster, if you consider her progressive (I do)

I really hate it when the remaster also means re-mix. One great example is ZZTOP's "Tres Hombres". The redone guitar parts sound so out of place in my opinion...like they were very obviously dubbed in.

I fully agree and at the same time i also really, really wonder why Hounds of Love
upto now is the only Kate Bush album which has been remastered and included with 6 bonus tracks!?. The rest of her back catalogue is still the same old stuff from
back in the 80's of the last century!!!!, a bloody shame if you'd ask me.

I've wondered this myself for years. She is still huge in England so I'm sure there is plenty of demand. It must be a legal issue.
Jeff Beck's fusion remasters are very good. Nice separation without sounding artificial. But still no remaster for There and Back.
I also like the remasters of AC/DC's first two albums (the first two in the US I mean)

Do you think so...?? 'mmmm i actually doubt that as she has been under contract
with EMI for her entire career sofar.... I really feel bad about this as there is sooo
much bonus material (single b-sides and loads of other rarities) which could be included if all her albums should be remastered, each album could be turned into a real 'gem' this way so easily (just like Hounds of Love) but upto now sadly nothing has happened. Personally i think EMI is just not interested because of the fact that
the 'big bosses behind the desks' don't think they can make enough money out of
a Kate Bush remaster project. They choose to 'cash in' easily with the Beatles and
some of their present 'hit-bands/artists' instead... ![]()

Hi Karissss ! I think I used the wrong words to express myself. My PT 's "lightbulb sun" version is, on one hand, the stereo version mix and on the other hand the 5.1 surround mix (DVDA) wich contains additional material. Yes it's impossible for me to listen to the 5.1 because i only have a stereo Hifi and of course when i put the 5.1 DVDA version in my DVD player (wich is not a DVDA player ...) the sound quality is bad. I assume I don't have the compatable equipment (maybe one day...) , but this cd was a gift ! so i won't throw it away !
I recently bought the Pink Floyd "Animals" remastered version, but didn't have time to compare it to the normal version. Did anyone have this opportunity ?

Hi Nane35, i do have the remastered 'Animals' and i also still have the LP-version
and the 'old' cd-version and honestly to my ears there is pretty little difference
inbetween both cd's. Maybe the -remastered- version has an overall somewhat
clearer/louder sound but it did not had an effect on me which appears when
listening to other remastered cd's... when you suddenly discover sounds you'd
never heard before on previous lp/cd versions of the same record. FYG i am
talking about the remasters which were released prior to the 'Ohh ehmm by
the way' 14cd box which was released somewhere in 2007. Does anybody know
if these cd's are 'new' remasters (again) as i simply don't know anyone who
actually bought this box and can fill me in on this or if this box is still using the
'old' remasters from the previous batch....? i.e. is this box is simply just 'old wine in new casks' as we are used to say here in Holland ![]()

If anyone remembers "Go" with Stomu Yamashta/Steve Winwood/Al DiMeola/Michael Shrieve, it's been remasteresd and sound great.
Not prog but Mountain's "Greatest Hits" was finally remastered & is 1000X better than the lousy album recorded original CD.

When i purchase my complete RUSH remastered collection for 9:99 each i was on paradise! Particulary for Power Windows and Presto. I wait for Vapor Trails remastered because the two songs remastered (One little Victory and Eartshine) on the retrospectives 3 is simply an awsome result!

Hi Symfoon, mine is a 95' s remastered cd. I've listened to it with headphones and I didn't notice sometimes really spectacular ! .... (if spectacular is the appropriate word !) . Maybe, as you said, it's clearer.
